ITALIAN ESTATE

La Pellegrina. Umbria . Italy

Italian farmhouse garden design with argicultural landscape

The brief for this project was to create a serene and restorative garden—a sanctuary for a family seeking refuge from the pace and pressures of London life. The vision was to harmoniously integrate modern comforts with the timeless elegance of a traditional Italian landscape, with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and sustainable design.

Set in the rolling hills of Umbria, the estate presented both opportunity and challenge: expansive grounds paired with fertile yet shallow soils required a thoughtful and responsive planting strategy to ensure long-term vitality.

At the heart of the design lies a seamless union of nature and structure.

The result is a sprawling country garden centred around the farmhouse, effortlessly merging with the surrounding agricultural landscape, ancient woodland, and species-rich meadows. The use of locally sourced stone and materials strengthens the connection to place, while naturalistic planting softens transitions and reinforces a sense of belonging within the environment.

The estate’s gently undulating terrain is embraced rather than altered, with a cherry tree-lined driveway forming a graceful approach to the property, setting the tone for the experience within.

The garden now exudes a sense of shelter and nurture, offering distinct spaces for gathering, family life, and quiet reflection. Each area is thoughtfully designed to enhance moments of connection while preserving the overall harmony of the wider landscape

This project is a celebration of tradition reimagined—where enduring beauty meets modern living, and where every element serves both function and feeling.
